Complexity of the Modern American City

The app National Symposium New Haven: Complexity of the Modern American City includes an exciting variety of lectures, tours and social events.

The Symposium will kick off on Wednesday, June 21 with a panel discussion led by Timothy Rohan, Mandi Issacs Jackson and Karen DuBois-Walton entitled New Haven: Reconsidering the Model City’s Past and Imagining Its Future. This keynote address will take place in the Yale University Art Gallery auditorium followed by a reception at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library

On Thursday, June 22, Symposium educational sessions will take place on the 9th floor of the newly restored Hotel Marcel beginning at 8:30 AM. A light breakfast and boxed lunches will be provided before guests head off to walking tours downtown. Walking tours will begin at 2 PM from the Yale Architecture building. Note that transportation to and from Hotel Marcel to the Yale Architecture building is not provided.

On Friday, June 23, the Symposium educational sessions will move downtown with morning discussions beginning at 8:30 AM at the Yale Architecture building and EITHER The Study Hotel or the Loria Center (immediately adjacent to the architecture school). At 11:30 AM Symposium guests will reconvene for a closing plenary with Sara Bronin, Chair, U.S. Advisory Council on Historic Preservation at the Yale University Art Gallery auditorium. Walking tours will start at Yale Architecture at 2 PM. Be sure to join us to close out the Symposium festivities with a closing reception at Harvest Wine Bar (Yale Center for British Art Lower Court). The museum is currently closed to the public for conservation but it is our hope that app attendees will be allowed the opportunity to access portions of the building depending on the current status of work.

Saturday guests will enjoy a variety of bus and walking tours in and around New Haven. All bus tours leave and return to Hotel Marcel. Please see the tour description for the starting and ending points for the Saturday walking tours.

Because Connecticut has an abundance of Modernism throughout the state, we will conclude our activities with a self-driven (but guided) tour of sites in Fairfield County. Please see the tour description for additional details.

Tickets for all of these events are available on the registration page. Full Symposium registration provides admission to all sessions, keynotes and receptions. Tours are additional.
