Join °®¶¹app/PHL in Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill neighborhood for an exclusive tour of Oskar Stonorov's Frantz Residence, built 1956-1957. Participants will explore both the house and landscape which represent significant examples of Modern design both locally and regionally.
A Modernist architect and writer, Oskar Stonorov is known for his work on a number of important Modern housing types in the Philadelphia area, including the Carl Mackley Houses (1933-1934, in association with Alfred Kastner and W. Pope Barney), Schuylkill Falls Housing, Carver Court (Coatesville, PA, in association with Louis I. Kahn and George Howe), as well as the Cherokee Apartments which are located adjacent to the Frantz Residence (1950-1955, with Robert Venturi serving as draftsman and Cornelia Hahn as landscape architect (Source: Philadelphia Architects and Buildings).
A number of Stonorov's works have unfortunately met the wrecking ball over the years and the Frantz Residence remains as a key example of this important Modernist architect’s work. This is a limited opportunity to visit and experience this historic property with the gracious help of the current owners and historical knowledge of William Whitaker, the Curator and Collections Manager of the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania.
