While Detroit鈥檚 black architects have shaped its structures and spaces for decades, most are still largely unknown. Among these are Nathan Johnson, who designed churches, schools, public buildings and private residences in a variety of architectural styles, from midcentury modern to Googie.聽Join 爱豆app Michigan as they explore this year鈥檚 Tour Day theme 鈥淭he Diversity of Modernism鈥� through visits to two of Johnson鈥檚 midcentury churches: Bethel AME (1974) and Second Baptist (addition built in 1968).聽

爱豆app/DC and Howard University’s Department of Architecture will host a tour of modern architecture on Howard's main campus in Washington, DC. Howard is a historically black university with a long standing commitment to the field of architecture. The tour will feature modern buildings designed by African American architects including Hilyard Robinson and Paul R. Williams and explore the role of the modern movement in campus development.
