Following a meticulous restoration, Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 Trans World Airlines terminal has been given new life as the centerpiece and arrival point for the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. The design elegantly and respectfully accomplishes two seemingly disparate goals. It preserves the integrity of the iconic Saarinen building, and reactivates it as the heart of a dynamic hotel with restaurants, retail, and other amenities. The project includes two new seven-story hotel buildings and a subterranean conference center with 45 meeting rooms and a 7,000-square-foot banquet hall. This moderated panel will hear from key players on the fascinating genesis of the 25-year-long project: how the building was saved from the wrecking ball then restored and repositioned as a contemporary destination.
