°®¶¹app New York/Tri-State’s mission is to increase public awareness and appreciation of Modern Movement architecture, landscape and urban design; to identify and document local examples; and to advocate for the protection of those determined most significant. Since 1996, our all-volunteer chapter has been advancing this mission in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. We have operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation since 2006. Our chapter is guided by an 11-person board, whose current members include John Arbuckle, Ritika Jharia, Kyle Johnson, Sean Khorsandi, Melanie Macchio, Leslie Monksy, Kathleen Randall, Nina Rappaport, Bill Ryall, Frampton Tolbert, and D’juro Villaran-Rokovich.

We keep our audience updated with the latest news and activities through a monthly email newsletter and our website. In 2015, we launched , a print publication that aims to put buildings, history, proponents and ideals of the Modern Movement in a fresh perspective, especially as they relate to issues in our region.

Documentation

Our chapter’s documentation efforts include publishing a monthly email newsletter, conducting architectural surveys, writing documentation and preparing fiches for the °®¶¹app Register.

Programs

Our public programs and tours are made possible by a small but dedicated group of volunteers. Our Modern Conversations is an ongoing series of evening talks with individuals engaged in the documentation or preservation of Modern Movement architecture at the Knoll showroom in New York. In addition, our chapter organizes a variety of educational programs both independently and jointly with local organizations. Every October we sponsor tours as part of °®¶¹app Tour Day and Open House New York Weekend. For our tours we make a point of selecting lesser-known venues and those normally not open to the public, or finding experts to speak about places we think we know well.

Advocacy

Since its founding, our chapter has frequently delivered letters of support or expert testimony when significant Modern buildings and sites are at risk. Additionally we provide stewardship assistance to owners of Modern properties and participate in forums and conferences related to the preservation of Modernism. We strive to be proactive in our advocacy through surveys and work on designation and National Register nominations.
