“Live Study and Play” day presents the impact that the modern movement has had on our everyday life.
The panel EXTENDING AND PRESERVING THE MODERN AMERICAN DWELLING highlights new concerns for sustainability and longevity considering our changing climate, and how preservation can go beyond typical house typologies in consideration of new avenues for preservation.
The second panel, THE MODERN DWELLING AT AMERICA'S CROSSROADS takes a focused eye towards the legacies of Chicago area residential structures designed by notable architects such as Mies Van Der Rohe, Walter Netsch, as well as over a dozen less-known architects who built in and around Chicago in the early and mid-twentieth century. You will also witness the challenges of restoring and preserving many of these monuments of steel, wood, and glass.
This series of one-hour programs will highlight residential and educational typologies from midwestern schools to houses in Tennessee.
Day Three finishes with virtual tours of three remarkable houses in the Chicagoland suburbs: the Schweikher House and Studio (Paul Schweikher, 1938); the Ford House (Bruce Goff, 1949); and the McCormick House (Mies van der Rohe, 1952).
