The latest surrounding the Houston Astrodome is the Harris County Taxpayer Protection Act failed to proceed through the state legislature. Had this bill passed it would have forced Harris County to hold an election for voters to approve the proposed Astrodome Redevelopment. Consequently, Phase I design which includes raising the floor to create 1,400 parking spaces is proceeding, with construction projected to commence in approximately 18 months.

 

Additionally, the , formed in the summer of 2016, continues to explore opportunities for opening up the Astrodome to the public for short-term uses. The Astrodome was recently granted State Antiquities Landmark Status and despite various set-backs lives to see another day.
