Join °®¶¹app/OR for a lively lecture and guided walking tour of Mid-Century Modern facilities at Reed College.
Reed College's Modern Era development is characterized by a significant post World War II spike in enrollment, which lead to increased demand for new residences and student support functions, and a desire to enhance the number and type of academic programs. The campus celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1961 by prompting a Ten-Year Advancement Program to grow the faculty, increase scholarships, and expand facilities. Reed's Modern Era resources include housing, classrooms, laboratories, dining facilities, sports facilities, and a library expansion. Modern Era buildings on campus were designed by local and nationally known architects that depict Modernist tenets and materials as well as regional and relaxed interpretations of the style.
Paul Falsetto, AIA, project coordinator for the Reed College Heritage Master Plan, will lead a lecture about Reed's history, Modern era campus development, and the creation of the Heritage Master Plan. Following the lecture, Eric Wheeler of Positively Portland Walking Tours and Paul Edison-Lahm will lead a campus walking tour that showcases the campus's collection of Modern Era resources and illustrates this important phase of Reed College's evolution.
Bring a picnic or grab some food from the dining hall and join us on Reed's Great Lawn following the tour.
