James Rose Center Tour #1

James Rose Center

506 E Ridgewood Avenue
Ridgewood, NJ
Image details

The James Rose Residence, designed by landscape architect James Rose as a primary residence for himself, his mother, and his sister, is a significant example of a thoughtfully integrated Modernist building and landscape. The initial construction was completed in 1953. Rose revisited his scheme in early 1970s, making significant architectural additions and abandoning his original grid-based planting scheme for a more organic landscape. The building and site continued to evolve until his death in 1991, when the property took on an institutional role and became the James Rose Center, focusing on research in landscape architecture and design.

This special 1-hour long tour will be led by Dean Cardassis, FASLA, professor emeritus of landscape architecture at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; director of the James Rose Center; and principal designer of Cave Hill Landscape Architects. His landscape designs and modern preservation projects have won national awards, and his articles on modern and contemporary design have been widely published. His biography of James Rose, James Rose: A Voice Offstage, won the J.B. Jackson Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies.
