Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church and the Redevelopment of the Dixwell Neighborhood
Join us for a free open house held at Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church, designed by John Johansen, Charles Warner Jr. will discuss the church’s history and architecture and its connection to the 1960 Dixwell Redevelopment and Renewal Plan. The Dixwell Plan took a holistic approach to instituting urban renewal ideals in the neighborhood with building new, Modernist commercial, institutional, religious, and community-focused buildings and public spaces. Exhibits will be on display to browse.
Handouts will be available for a local self-walking tour through which visitors can learn more about the surrounding Modernist Dixwell area buildings, including several by local architect Edward E. Cherry.
