Prospect Hill Modernism (Bus Tour)

Location

New Haven, CT
Image details

New Haven’s most affluent neighborhood, Prospect Hill is home to not only grand early twentieth-century homes, but also a range of important mid-century modern residences. Focusing on these domestic structures, highlights of the tour will include the house of Ed Logue (1955), the visionary development administrator of the New Haven Redevelopment Agency; the work of husband-wife duo Carlton and Diana Granbery; and a range of experimental buildings designed by local architects for their own families, including those of William deCossy (1972), Howard Lathrop (1973), Gene Festa (1974), King-lui Wu (1978), and Peter Tagiuri (1986). Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the progressive educational architecture of the Foote School (1957–60) and tour First Presbyterian Church (1966), a little-known masterpiece designed by congregation member John Dinkeloo with James Owens.

Guide: Architectural historian Michael Waters, a board member of the New Haven Preservation Trust and an assistant professor at Columbia University, will lead this tour.
