Join Mid Tex Mod, the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM), Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and San Antonio Public Library's (SAPL) Carver Branch for °®¶¹app Tour Day 2019 to celebrate the work of Norcell Haywood, the first licensed black architect in San Antonio.
Haywood championed the community architect concept and believed "[minority architects] should be able to beneficially serve their profession and community at the same time without having to serve one at the expense of the other" (Henry, Jesse Jr. "The Community Architect Concept," San Antonio Express/News, Sunday, 17 September 1972, p. 10-G).
Attendees will hear from panelists representing SAAACAM and SAPL's Carver Branch, and will then be free to tour Haywood's Antioch Missionary Baptist Church (1974). Mid Tex Mod will also provide a map of Haywood projects in San Antonio, including his home and his office building on the city's Eastside, for a self-guided driving tour.
Share your story! Attendees will have the opportunity to contribute their stories about Haywood and his spaces to SAAACAM, whose volunteers will be available to record oral histories for the archive.
